HISTORY

Ground History

Rice Road had been used as the home ground of Ammanford AFC for many years, even when the club were known as Betws FC and Ammanford Town. In 1963 the clubhouse was built on the grounds of Rice Road. In 1964 the club built a 450-seater stand which at the time cost an astonishing £4,000. Unfortunately, in April 2003 there was a fire at the stand and it was burned down.

In the 2006/07 season, following the closing of the clubhouse and changing rooms, all Welsh League games were moved to the Rec to follow the ground criteria required to play at this standard.

FIRST EVER GAME

The first ever game on the Recreation Ground took place in 2006, an U17s fixture against Lonlas, which Ammanford won 2–1, having won the League and Cup Double the previous season.

The Welsh League pitch is the newest in the Ammanford AFC setup, having been built after Ammanford RFC moved their pitch to play vertically rather than horizontally. The football field runs in parallel to the rugby pitch and is surrounded by fencing.

For the 2006/07 season all Welsh League games were moved to the new ground. Railings, fencing, dugouts and a stand were introduced in 2007; concrete was added around the ground in 2010 and behind the nearest goal in 2011; railings were added behind the nearest goal in 2012.

In the summer of 2018 the ground was significantly improved as the club ensured they maintained the criteria to remain within Tier 2 of the Welsh League. Perimeter fencing, floodlights and a 250-seater stand were added. In the summer of 2024, turnstiles were installed.
