Ammanford secured their first victory over Pontypridd in nearly seven years with an impressive 3–0 win at USW Sports Park.

Callum Thomas’ first-half strike, followed by second-half goals from substitutes Owain Davies and Morgan Clarke, earned Town a fully deserved success and opened up a seven-point gap to fourth place in the table.

Wyn Thomas made one alteration to the starting XI that had defeated Ynyshir Albions a week earlier, with Callum Thomas returning to the side, and the young forward needed just eight minutes to make his mark.

Dan John broke down the right-hand side before firing a shot against the post. Unfortunately for the hosts, the rebound fell straight to Thomas, in the centre of the penalty area, who had the simple task of rolling the ball into the net.

In reply, Pontypridd enjoyed the majority of possession but, aside from Thomas Gameson’s effort that drifted past the post, Luke Martin’s goal was rarely threatened.

Indeed, it was Ammanford who went closest to extending their advantage before the interval. Euros Griffiths saw a header cleared off the line before Dan and Adam John combined, only for some determined last-ditch defending to deny a second goal.

After the hour mark, the Black and Whites switched formation, with Clarke and Davies introduced from the bench, and the tactical change soon paid dividends. Dan John and Babucar Sauane caused problems down the flanks before a deserved second arrived. Clarke produced an excellent run down the right and delivered a cross across the box to an unmarked Davies, who netted his first goal in Ammanford colours.

Gwion Pugh Jones’ header, which flew over the crossbar with fifteen minutes remaining, served as a warning; however, it was Town who finished the stronger, driven by the tireless work of Dan and Adam John in attack.

That energy led to the final goal in the closing minute. Dan John latched onto a long clearance and, showing great awareness, squared the ball to Clarke, who repeated his earlier-season feat by finding the net against the Dragons.

The result extended Ammanford’s unbeaten run to eleven matches, as they head into next week’s WBS League Cup quarter-final, before a mouth-watering clash with second-placed Trefelin in a fortnight.
