In Memory and Solidarity: Ammanford AFC to Run 30 Miles to Afan Lido Fixture

A group of runners from Ammanford AFC will be taking on the challenge of running to our fixture against Afan Lido when the two sides meet this weekend in the JD Cymru South.

Although the two clubs may be rivals on the pitch, off it they have been united in grief and mourning after suffering heartbreaking losses.

Afan Lido suffered the tragic loss of Ioan Evans earlier this month, which brought back the harrowing memories our club faced when we lost Jac Lewis back in 2019.

“We wanted to show our support to the family and friends of Ioan,” vice-chairman and participant Rhodri Jones stated.

“We understand first-hand what loss feels like, and while the support we received couldn’t fill the enormous void left by Jac’s passing, it was a huge source of comfort for us in those dark days and we were incredibly comforted by the fact that the close knit Welsh football community rallied around us in our hour of need.

“We hope that all at Afan Lido, along with Ioan’s family and friends, understand that the hands of friendship will always be there from us at Ammanford.”

Rhodri will be joined on the run by former captain Rhys Fisher, striker Matthew Jones, ex‑commercial manager Jason Pocock, as well as Morriston Town physio Richard Pelta.

The team will begin their run at 6:30am at the Recreation Ground before making their way up the Amman Valley to Brynamman, Ystradgynlais, Pontardawe, Rhos, Neath, and Briton Ferry, before completing the 30‑mile run in Port Talbot in time for the 2pm kick-off on St David’s Day.

The group are raising money for two charities: The Jac Lewis Foundation and Big Moose; a suicide prevention charity chosen by Ioan Evans’ family. You can support their efforts by donating at the link here:  https://bit.ly/4kRP1Xs
