Ammanford made a winning start to the 2025/26 campaign with a hard-fought victory over league newcomers Cardiff Draconians.

A second-half header from Euros Griffiths was enough to secure all three points for Wyn Thomas’ men, who also recorded back-to-back clean sheets in competitive fixtures.

Having made just one change from the side that held Cardiff City to a goalless draw, Ammanford nearly made the perfect start. Just two minutes in, Seth Woodhouse turned smartly in the box but fired wide from the season’s first real chance.

Town’s pre-match preparations were disrupted when last week’s man of the match, Chris Bell, picked up an injury and was replaced by Griffiths. However, the change did little to halt the Black and Whites’ momentum. Ammanford dominated the first half, though the only clear opportunity came when the lively Adam John curled an effort inches wide of the post.

To their credit, the hosts came out stronger after the break and enjoyed the better of the early second-half exchanges. Luke Martin, largely untested in the first half, was called into action twice —first tipping Dan Bowen’s header over the bar, then saving well with his feet from Nathan Mathias.

Those chances sparked Ammanford back into life. John saw his strike brilliantly saved, and moments later, Callum Thomas hooked a shot over the bar.

Midway through the second half, both sides came close to breaking the deadlock. Morgan Clarke intercepted a loose pass on halfway and surged toward goal, only to be denied by the legs of Harry Johnson. At the other end, Harri Edwards’ fierce drive was stopped on the line at the second attempt.

The breakthrough finally came with 13 minutes remaining. A corner was whipped into the six-yard box, where Griffiths rose highest to power home a bullet header and give the visitors a deserved lead.

Both sides had penalty appeals waved away in a tense finale, but Ammanford held firm through four minutes of added time to secure a valuable opening-day win.
