Away Day Guide: Aberystwyth Town

Bank Holiday Monday sees us make the long trip to the seaside to take on newly relegated Aberystwyth Town in the JD Cymru South. The Seasiders have made a strong start to their first campaign outside the top flight in over 30 years, with an identical record to the Black and Whites, at the time of writing (Friday 22nd August).

Here is a handy guide to everything the Black and White Army needs to know to enjoy their trip to one of the meccas of the Welsh footballing pyramid.

Match Details

  • Opposition: Aberystwyth Town
  • Competition: JD Cymru South
  • Date: Monday 25th August
  • Kick-off: 2:30pm

How to Get There

It’s roughly a ninety-minute drive from Ammanford to Aberystwyth. However, this can vary depending on traffic, particularly on a Bank Holiday Monday, so we advise leaving with plenty of time.

The nearest train station is Aberystwyth, which is a five-minute walk from Park Avenue.

Parking

There is a small pay-and-display car park next to Park Avenue, costing £4 for 2 hours, £5 for 4 hours, and £7 for 24 hours. This car park tends to fill up quickly, but within a five-minute walk is the Lower Park Avenue Car Park, which offers the same pricing, but has more spaces available.

There is limited free street parking across the walkable bridge on Glanrafon Terrace, but please be mindful of residents (images below).

To reach the council car parks, when you arrive in Aberystwyth, turn right at the mini roundabout, and head down the small hill towards Morrisons. At the roundabout, take the second exit, and follow the main road for around a mile. Park Avenue Football Ground will be on your left-hand side, opposite Home Bargains. Lower Park Avenue Car Park will be on the right-hand side before this. When you see the sign for the Vale of Rheidol Railway, turn right.

Facilities

Park Avenue is one of the few artificial pitches in the league.

There is an on-site clubhouse, offering a selection of draught and bottled alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. A canteen is also available, serving a variety of hot and cold drinks, as well as food.

Aberystwyth boasts a wealth of fantastic pubs, all within walking distance, and catering to a range of preferences. The closest is Rummers Wine Bar. For a budget-friendly option, Yr Hen Orsaf, adjacent to the train station, is ideal. Nearby, you’ll also find The Vale of Rheidol, The Cambrian, and The Hoptimist.

A little further afield, but well worth a visit, are The Glengower on the seafront, offering stunning views of Cardigan Bay, and The Ship and Castle, known for its wide selection of guest beers and ales.

Last Meeting

Who can forget last year’s historic cup victory, when Callum Thomas’ first-half strike was enough to separate the two sides? At the time, Aberystwyth were a top-flight club. However, since that match, only three players from that squad remain, meaning Wyn Thomas’ men face a very different prospect this time around.
