Ammanford progressed to the second round of the Welsh Blood Service League Cup with an excellent victory at rain soaked Trefelin.

The game was played in torrential rain and it was Ammanford who started the game well, passing the ball around with confidence and dominating possession.

Owain Davies was first to test home keeper Scott Coughlan from long range in the third minute who saved well.

Ammanford continued to press forward in search of an opener and Matt Delaney was unlucky to see a volley flash over the bar.

A minute later centre half Euros Griffiths saw a goal bound effort deflect out for a corner off a Trefelin defender. From the resulting corner Delaney saw his header also deflect wide of the goal.

Winger Rhys Davies saw a low shot saved by Coughlan in the Trefelin goal.

Ammanford will have been frustrated not to have capitalised on their early domination and as the half hour mark approached the home team started to get a foot in the game and Roan Piper saw a shot well saved by Luke Martin.

On the half hour Trefelin had a goal ruled out for offside and a minute later another excellent save from Martin kept the score level.

Trefelin were finishing the first half strongly and after 39 minutes a superb save from Martin kept out a free kick from Jordan Davies.

Ammanford still had their chances and two minutes later Adam John sent a header wide when well positioned.

As the first half went into the third minute of injury time Ammanford took the lead with a sweeping counter attack which saw Rhys Davies take the ball down the right flank and deliver a perfect low cross for Dan John to stroke the ball past the despairing dive of Coughlan.

Ammanford almost doubled their lead in the final seconds of the first half when Coughlan saved well to prevent an own goal with one of the Trefelin defenders sending the ball towards the bottom corner of the net.

There was no let up in conditions at the start of the second half and both teams were clearly finding the driving rain difficult and a solid rear guard from Ammanford restricted Trefelin to half chances as the second half wore on.

Trefelin meanwhile were struggling to cope with the pace and energy of the front trio of Adam John, Dan John and Rhys Davies.

Seven minutes into the second half Adam John sent a free kick over the bar.

On 65th minutes Dan John had a fantastic opportunity to extend the lead, capitalising on a defensive mix up but his effort from close range was  blocked by Coughlan.

Trefelin pushed forward in search of an equaliser but saw clear cut chances restricted by the excellent Ammanford defence.

Roan Piper did spurn a gilt edged chance six minutes from time when he was left in space in the area but pulled his shot wide of the goal.

Trefelin captain Jordan Davies was sent off in injury time and Ammanford stood firm for the extra five minutes to celebrate a well earned victory.

Another clean sheet for the excellent Luke Martin and his team mates with only a solitary penalty conceded in the first seven matches of the season.
