Ammanford made it three home wins in as many games coming out on top of a five goal thriller at the Recreation Ground.

In a battle between two unbeaten sides in the JD Cymru South, Dan John’s brace and Morgan Clarke’s smart finish saw Town move up to second in the league.

The visitors started the stronger as they had a golden opportunity after just four minutes. The Young Guns’ top scorer from last season, Liam Bishop, went through one on one with Luke Martin but fortunately, for Ammanford, his effort was over the bar.

After being let off five minutes previously, the Reds made the most of their bright start by taking the lead. Martin had gone 399 minutes since conceding his last goal against Llantwit however, there was little he could do about Dan Griffiths low effort into the corner of the net after the attacker had shown excellent feet to work space on the edge of the area.

Going behind for the first time this season galvanised the Black and Whites and they found themselves level just seconds later. On loan star Daniel John fired a venomous strike towards goal which found its home past Exauce Dimonekene in the Caerau goal via a deflection.

If his first goal was a thing of beauty, his second was even better. Adam Orme looped the ball into the penalty area and with the ball coming over his shoulder, he lashed the ball on the volley first time to send the Black and White army into raptures.

Although former Town defender Harrison Lewis went close with a header, it was Ammanford who had the upper hand for the rest of the period. But despite enjoying the better of the play, they couldn’t get a third goal to make their dominance count although Adam John and Callum Humphreys went close with a pair of chances.

The third goal eventually arrived five minutes after the restart. This time, John turned provider, slipping a beautifully weighted pass into the path of Clarke, who calmly slotted home his first goal of the season.

With a two-goal cushion, the hosts looked in control, though they were forced into a nervy final quarter after conceding a penalty with 14 minutes remaining. Substitute Jack Ashford sent Martin the wrong way from the spot to pull one back for Caerau Ely.

Although the visitors pushed for an equaliser, it was Wyn Thomas’ men who created the better chances late on. New signing Alex Giardelli went agonisingly close to a debut goal after being played through. However, his delicate chip skimmed the post on its way behind for a goal kick.

Desperate to maintain their unbeaten start, Caerau pressed the home goal in the dying embers.  However,  they couldn’t beat a well drilled and well marshalled defence to send the healthy Recreation Ground crowd of 361 home happy.
